Bill
Number: HB 866
Bill Title:
Employment Agencies - Bonding - Enforcement Authority
Bill Sponsor(s):
Delegate Beidle
Subject:
Employment Relations
Committee:
ECM
Bill Summary:
This bill authorizes the Commissioner of Labor and Industry to investigate complaints relating to alleged violations of specified bonding requirements by employment agencies; requiring the Commissioner to provide a specified notice; and authorizes the Commissioner to impose a penalty under specified circumstances.
History: None
Chamber Position: Support Position
Summary: By allowing the Commissioner to investigate when a complaint has been raised, employers who use employment agencies will have more assurance that those agencies are actually bonded, which is expected to increase reliability and reduce false claims of bonding. There is currently a requirement to post bond, and this bill does not change the amount of the bond.
For these reasons, the Maryland Chamber supports this legislation. Position Statement: Click here to download a pdf version of the Maryland Chamber's position statement.
